You want to go out on an adventure to see the world and practice your magical skills. You’re preparing your spells and supplies, but suddenly something hits you. All these years they’ve taught you about magic, and that’s about it. You don’t know what equipment will be useful in your journey, or what kind of sidearm suits you best. What’s the best staff? Should you be avoiding melee combat, or perhaps keep a sword handy, just in case? Today we answer all these questions and more, as we take a look at the best weapons a sorcerer should have in their DS2 arsenal.
7. Watcher Greatsword
The general idea of a good “Sorcerer weapon” is something that requires minimal investment in stats other than intelligence, such as strength and dexterity, in order to maximize the potential of your spells. From that, you can guess most of the weapons listed here will mostly be small or medium weapons. And not a lot of greathammers or axes, for example. Our first entry is the Watcher Greatsword, the magic counterpart to the thunderous Defender Greatsword. It’s got a well-rounded physical and magical attack rating, and an innate special attack which buffs the blade while consuming durability. How to get: Trade the Throne Watcher Soul to Weaponsmith Ornifex.
6. Dragonrider Twinblade
If you’ve read any of my other articles, you know I like to keep things spicy. And of course I couldn’t let you down this time. It’s a bit ironic how I talked about sorcerers wanting small and fast weapons, and then go ahead and recommending the heaviest twinblade there is. But the Dragonrider Twinblade comes with innate magic damage, which I definitely recommend to increase further with a magic infusion. Due to its speed and poise damage, you can keep staggering most enemies until they meet their inevitable demise. The twinblades aren’t the easiest weapons to use. But once you get it down, they are extremely handy in many scenarios. How to get: Trade the Dragonrider Soul to Straid of Olaphis.
5. Blue Flame
And here’s a weapon that’s a two-for-one combo! The Blue Flame is a straight sword that can also act as a catalyst to cast sorceries. It’s one of the weirder weapons due to how buffs work on it. Since, for example, if you use any variation of the “Magic Weapon” spell to increase its magic attack rating, you’ll also deal more damage with your sorceries. At the end of the day when you run out of spells, don’t forget that the Blue Flame is an actual sword that you can stab your enemies with! How to get: Dropped by Leydia Pyromancer and Dual Wielding Swordsman.
4. Ice Rapier
Thrusting swords are some of my favorite weapons in the entire game. They’re also arguably one of the best weapon-types due to their quick attacks, movesets, damage, and all around great stats. The Ice Rapier, other than being a rapier, also possesses a unique strong attack, which fires off an ice-like projectile that does magical damage. If you’re going to use this as a sorcerer, you should definitely infuse it with magic – which will provide a sizable magic-damage bonus, and make the projectile attack do extra damage, all in exchange for a measly 30 physical AR! How to get: Dropped by Spellswords.
3. Moonlight Greatsword
Throughout the whole Dark Souls franchise, there’s never been a more iconic magic weapon than the Moonlight Greatsword. This big blue hunk of a quartz has accompanied sorcerers since the early days of yonder, and for a good reason. It’s a pretty powerful greatsword that can slice through anything. But it can also fire laser beams to pick off enemies from afar! Because of its weird magical nature, you can take the Moonlight Greatsword down two different ways, depending on what your build requires the most. You can either leave it as-is (or imbue it with magic when you’ve got over 50 intelligence), and have it deal pure magical damage… or go down the Enchanted path and turn it into a physical beat-stick, though the second option will make the beam attack deal zero damage. No matter what you choose, the MLGS is never a bad pick. How to get: Trade the Old Paledrake Soul to Weaponsmith Ornifex.
2. Staff of Wisdom
A sorcerer is never truly ready without their most important tool: the staff. I’ve opted to only include two staves in this list, in order not to clutter it up. And depending on your personal preferences, either one could be “the best”. If what you’re after is damage, then the Staff of Wisdom is the choice for you. It’s also quite long compared to most other staves, which might cause your spells to miss sometimes if your target is too close to you. You can also use that to your advantage, though, since it will also increase the length of the Soul Greatsword, causing it to hit enemies that are behind you. As with most staves, infusing it with magic will cause your sorceries to be even stronger. How to get: Dropped by a Mimic in Brightstone Cove Tseldora, inside an abandoned house.
1. Witchtree Branch
You might be thinking “if the last staff is already the strongest, what could possibly rival it to be in the number one spot?” Speed, the answer is speed! Because of the nature of the game, you won’t always be able to just stand there and unload every spell in your grimoire. Some enemies will rush you and catch you off-guard. The Witchtree Branch might not do the absolute maximum damage, but that doesn’t mean it’s not powerful. And all the while it’s just here being the fastest staff in the game. It’s especially useful in PvP, helping you chain spell after spell, to take down your enemies before they even get a chance to scratch you. How to get: Found in a chest inside the pit in Majula. Requires the Forgotten Key, dropped by the Giants in Black Gulch. As a closing note, a Raw-infused weapon can always be a good idea for any caster build, if you need some physical damage with minimal strength and dexterity investments. I just didn’t include any in the list because I wouldn’t exactly call them “sorcerer weapons”, but don’t let that stop you from using them.
